You can plant Bermuda grass seed without any problem. It is especially good for
turf grass lawn in areas in the south. After planting the Bermuda grass seed, it is important to
keep in mind that the turf requires some tender love and care - You need to provide adequate
lawn grass care and mowing.
If you have sodded Bermuda grass then you should not over seed with Bermuda
grass seed. This is because the sodded grass can actually do well on its own if it is well taken
care of. Also, most Bermuda grass seed has varieties in terms of color and texture that the
hybrid grass sod.
The best time to fertilize our is when it is about 40 - 50% green in spring.
This means you should leave your lawn alone in winter. When it is time to mowing, which should
be several weeks after planting, do it in order to control weed and enable the grass to spread
fast. If the weed is getting out of hand, you should buy some selected post emergence
herbicides. Apply these 3 to 4 weeks after planting your Bermuda grass seed. Some other
herbicides that are currently being used include pendimethalin, dithiopyro (Dimension) and
prodiamine.
Just be aware that while all the pre-emergence turf herbicides may be made to do
the same job, not all of them are as good. Some are good in dealing with
particular weeds that others, some are plain cheap, some are safe to use etc. If you bought
Bermuda grass seeds to develop your turf, then you can rest assures that almost all
pre-emergence turf herbicides are somewhat safe on your Bermuda grass. Of course you would have
to follow the right instructions when applying them. For example, you for newly seeded grass,
you should apply pre-emergence turf herbicides at one-half the recommended rate.
You can develop a carpet turf by planting a sprig, which is a live vegetative
piece of the hybrid Bermuda grass plant taken from either stolons or rhizons. If the turf is
thin, then you are most likely to be faced with the problem of weeds especially if the turf has
received some water from the rain. The best way to deal with this is applying one
of the herbicides mentioned earlier. Just make sure that you are
not-overseeding, otherwise do not kill the weed this way.
If you are considering overseeding this grass with rye grass, then avoid
treating the turf with herbicides within the 60 to 110 days before planting - in fall.
You can also simply cover up some bare spots on your grass using the Bermuda
grass seed blend, which contains improved varieties of self-repairing
Bermuda grasses. Most of the seed blends come with coated with fungus protection for improved
germination and healthier seedling development. Try the Vigoro ultra turf, otherwise there are
